I use a product called Wet & Forget to clean mildew stains on the siding of my house. One gallon of Wet & Forget can be mixed with water to make 6 gallons of mixture. If my sprayer holds only 4 gallons, how much Wet & Forget concentrate and how much water do I need to fill my sprayer with 4 gallons of mixture?

Final answer:

To fill a 4-gallon sprayer with a Wet & Forget mixture, mix approximately 0.67 gallons of concentrate with 3.33 gallons of water, maintaining the 1:6 ratio of concentrate to the mixture.

Step-by-step explanation:

To figure out how much Wet & Forget concentrate and water you need to fill a 4-gallon sprayer, you need to use a proportional mix to the one specified (1 gallon of concentrate produces 6 gallons of mixture).

First, calculate the ratio of concentrate to the total mixture (concentrate + water):

  1. 1 gallon of concentrate makes 6 gallons of mixture. So the ratio is 1:6.
  2. For every 1 part of concentrate, there are 5 parts water (because 6 - 1 = 5).

Now you need a total of 4 gallons of mixture in the same ratio:

  1. To find out how many parts in total: 1 part concentrate + 5 parts water = 6 parts.
  2. Divide 4 gallons by 6 parts to find out how much one part is: 4 / 6 = 0.6667 gallons per part.
  3. You need 1 part of concentrate: 0.6667 gallons of concentrate.
  4. Multiply the water parts by per part volume: 5 parts water × 0.6667 gallons per part = 3.3335 gallons of water.

To fill your 4-gallon sprayer, you would mix approximately 0.67 gallons of Wet & Forget concentrate with 3.33 gallons of water.
