The number of miles required for rental cost to be the same is 300 miles.

Creating a system of equation for the scenario:

  • Let x = number of miles

Company A :

  • 0.7x + 50 ____(1)

Company B :

  • 0.8x + 20 ____(2)

For cost to be the same

0.7x + 50 = 0.8x + 20

0.7x - 0.8x = 20 - 50

-0.1x = -30

x = 300

Hence, the number of miles required for rental cost to be the same is 300 miles.
