I check my fitness tracker and see that I'm only at 800 steps, so I walk to the store from my house and buy some eggs. A third of the way back home, I look at my fitness tracker again and see that I'm up to 2,000 steps. How many steps will I have once I get home?

Final answer:

Upon returning home, the student will have taken a total of 4,400 steps, which is determined by adding the initial 800 steps to the 3,600 steps taken going to the store and back.

Step-by-step explanation:

To find out how many steps the student will have by the time they get home, we first need to calculate the total number of steps taken from the house to the store. Since the student checked the fitness tracker a third of the way back and it showed 2,000 steps, and they started with 800 steps, we can first find out the steps taken from the house to the store and then a third of the way back.

The student had 2,000 steps - 800 steps = 1,200 steps for walking to the store and then a third of the way back. Considering this is only a third of the way back, the total steps for the entire trip back home would be 3 times 1,200 steps, which equals 3,600 steps.

Since we now know the round trip (going to the store and coming back) is 3,600 steps, and the student started with 800 steps, we can determine the total step count once home by adding these two figures together: 800 steps + 3,600 steps = 4,400 steps.

To find out how many steps you will have once you get home, we need to determine how many steps you took from your house to the store and back, and how many steps you took from the store back to your house. Firstly, we know that you walked 800 steps before going to the store. Then, after walking a third of the way back home, you checked your fitness tracker again and saw that you had reached 2,000 steps. This means that you took 2,000 - 800 = 1,200 steps from the store back to your house. When you add the steps you took from your house to the store (800) and the steps you took from the store back to your house (1,200), you get a total of 800 + 1,200 = 2,000 steps.
