Answer:

Let E = Euclid Elementary School

M = Math Middle School

H = Hypotenuse High School

E(-4, 1), M(1, 1), H(-4, -3)

a) EM = 1 - (-4) = 5 miles

b) EH = 1 - (-3) = 4 miles

c) MH = √((1 - (-4))² + (1 - (-3))²)

= √(5² + 4²) = √(25 + 16) = √41

= about 6.4 miles

d) Deon: HE + EM = 5 + 4 = 9 miles

Kaya: HM = about 6.4 miles

Kaya went the shortest distance

because the coordinates of the

three schools are the vertices of a

right triangle. MH is the

hypotenuse, and EM and EH are

the legs.
