Earthquakes are primarily caused by the sudden release of energy that has been stored in the Earth's crust .
How do earthquakes happen ?
The Earth's lithosphere is divided into several large and small tectonic plates that constantly move. These movements can result in the plates colliding, pulling apart, or sliding past each other.
When the stress along the boundaries of these plates exceeds the strength of the rocks, it can lead to the sudden rupture and release of energy, causing an earthquake. These are known as tectonic earthquakes and are the most common type.
Earthquakes can also be triggered by volcanic eruptions. The movement of magma beneath the Earth's surface can create pressure, and when this pressure is released suddenly, it can cause volcanic earthquakes.
