Read the prompt below and then choose the elements of a Constructive Response that the answer CONTAINS --put =

check beside EACH element that the answer satisfies- be sure that it completes every part of the element before you
check it.

Prompt: What is the PURPOSE of Beah's rhetorical question in Chapter 1?

"But what kind of liberation movement shoots innocent civilians, children, that little girl" (14).
Student Response:
Beah asks a rhetorical question to develop the idea that he does not understand how people who are supposed to be
"liberating" people can kill innocent civilian and children. The purpose of a rhetorical question is to emphasize a point. By
asking "what kind of liberation movement," he is emphasizing that he does not understana- or believe - that the rebels are
actually "liberating" or freeing the people, the civilians. By ending the question with "shoots innocent civilians, children, that
little girl," he is emphasizing that no one who says they are freeing children would kill the most innocent people in that society
--that is not freedom. The rhetorical question makes the reader think about the motives of the rebels and makes a point that
the first time Ishmael is confronted with war, he can see it is not good or noble.
Gives evidence and explains HOW the rhetorical question develops a point or message
Identifies the purpose of the rhetorical question - what it is used for
Answers the prompt completely. (identifies the purpose of the rhetorical question in the passage and its meaning)

= Answers the prompt completely. (identifies the purpose of the rhetorical question in the passage and its meaning)

How to explain

The student response effectively fulfills the criteria for a Constructive Response by meeting several key elements.

Firstly, it provides evidence and elucidates how the rhetorical question functions to develop a specific point or message.

It explains that the rhetorical question emphasizes the disbelief and lack of understanding regarding how a "liberation movement" could commit atrocities against innocent civilians, especially children.
