Why does the ph value of hydrocholic acid increase when magneiusm hydroxide is added

There is an equal concentration of hydroxide ions and hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ions (in hydrochloric acid) react with the hydroxide ions (in magnesium hydroxide) to for salt and water. This is a neutralisation reaction.
