3 times the length of a field increased by 4 times the width gives 24 units. Two times the length decreased by 3 times the width is -1 unit. Find the dimensions

Ok so you can form a system of equations where w is the width and l is the length:

3l + 4w = 24

2l - 3w = -1

you want to eliminate one of the variables and then solve, so you can first take the top equation and multiply both sides by 2:

6l + 8w = 48

next, multiply the second equation by 3:

6l - 9w = -3

now that both include 6l, you can subtract the two equations

6l + 8w = 48

- (6l - 9w = -3)

17w = 51

divide both sides by 17

w = 3

Plug w = 3 into the equation 3l + 4w = 24:

3l + 4 * 3 = 24

3l + 12 = 24

subtract 12 from both sides
