At a carnival, there is a game where you can draw one of 10 balls from a bucket. The balls are numbered from 1 to 10. If the number on the ball is even, you win $10. If the number on the ball is odd, you win nothing. X is the payoff for playing the game. Write the probability distribution of X in the table below.

The table for the probability distribution of X is :

X ____ P(X)

$0 ___ 0.5

$10 __ 0.5

The probability distribution of X can be obtained thus :

  • X = Amount won
  • P(X) = probability of winning X

For X = 10;

  • Favorable outcomes = even numbers
  • (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) = 5
  • P(X) = 5/10 = 0.5

For X = 0;

  • Favorable outcomes = odd numbers
  • (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) = 5
  • P(X) = 5/10 = 0.5

The filled table :

X ____ P(X)

$0 ___ 0.5

$10 __ 0.5
