1. Find what 4% of 22,000 is

0.04 × 22,000 = 880

You do this so that you can find out the increase from the original number of people in the city

2. Find out what 3 years of increase is

880 = 1 year's worth of increase

880 × 3 = 3 year's worth of increase

2640 = 3 year's worth of increase

Therefore the population increase is 2640 ( 12% )

METHOD 2

1. Find out what 12% of 22,000 is

4% = 0.04

12% = 3 × 0.04

12% = 0.12

12% of 22,000 = 0.12 × 22000

12% of 22,000 = 2640

Therefore the population increase is 2640 ( 12% )
