Why would a rational function not be a polynomial?.

Answer:

Polynomial functions use only whole numbers as exponents of the variables. Rational functions use variables with exponents in the denominator. But a fraction with exponents in the denominator is equivalent to using a negative exponent and this violates the definition of a polynomial.
