One spring day, Hakeem noted the time of day and the temperature, in degrees Fahrenheit. His findings are as follows: At 6 a.m., the temperature was 50° F. For the next 6 hours, the temperature rose 3° per hour. For the next 5 hours, it rose 1° per hour. The temperature then stayed steady until 6 p.m. For the next 3 hours, the temperature dropped 2° per hour. The temperature then dropped steadily until the temperature was 62° at midnight. On the set of axes below, graph Hakeem's data.

Hakeem's temperature data can be graphed with the following x and y coordinate values as follows:

y

|

90 ---|

|

80 ---|

|

70 ---|

|

60 ---|

|

50 ---|------------------------------------------------------x

6a.m. 12p.m. 6p.m. 12a.m.

Temperature Changes:

Time (x) Observed Change in

Temperature (y) Temperature

6 a.m. 50° F 0° F

12p.m. 68° F 18° F (3° x 6)

5 p.m. 73° F 5° F (1 x 5)

6 p.m. 73° F 0° F

9 p.m. 67° F 6° F (2° x 3)

12 Midnight 62° F 5° F (1.67° F x 3)

Thus, the x and y coordinates represent the pair of values showing the distance from the origin (0,0) along the horizontal axis (x) and the vertical axis (y).
