1. The fourth grade is going on a field trip. There are a total of 110 students and adults going on the trip. Each van can hold 9 students and adults.

Write an equation to determine how many vans, v, will be needed for the field trip.

2. How many vans will the fourth grade need to take? Explain your answer.

3. If the quotient were 15, how many students would be going on the trip? Show your work.

4. How can understanding the relationship between multiplication and division help you determine the answer to Part C?

Answer:

1. 110 / 9 = v

2. 13, because there would be a remainder in this problem and there is no way your just gonna leave a kid off the bus.

3. 135 students would be going on the trip

Work: 9 x 15

4. Understand the relationship between multiplication can help you determine the answer to part C because, when I was solving part C I was multiplying 9 by 15 which can be checked and seen if done correctly by doing 135 / 15 = 9 the other factor in the equation.

Explanation:

1. I read the problem and I saw that it would make since to do 110 divided by 9.

2. I solved the problem and I got 12.2222222 which would not make since as an answer because they want ALL the students and adults to go on the trip not only most.

3. So not gonna lie 3 was a bit confusing but I think what they meant was the maximum amount of kids who could go the trip so I multiplied 9 by 15.

4. Whenever I do my multiplication or division I always check it so I just felt that it would be a good answer for part c since it does help determine the answer. It is a pretty good way to check equations without a calculator.

Answer:

1. V=X divided by 9

2. = 13

3.= 15

4. Multiplication undoes division, and vice versa. So if we know one of the answers, we can do the reverse to get the other answer.

Explanation:

1. V (vans) = X (Students) diveded by 9.

2. X= 110. 110 divided by 9 = 12.2. You can't have 12.2 vans, so they will need 13 total vans.

3. If each van could hold 15 students then 135 students would be going. Each van could hold 9 students. Using the equation V=X/9, if V is 15, then X is 135. 135 divided by 9 equals 15, so this is true.

4. Multiplication undoes division, and vice versa. So if we know one of the answers, we can do the reverse to get the other answer.

Hope this helps!
