What is a domain, i was never taught thia and would like an explanation

Explanation:

A function has a domain and a range.

The domain is the range of values of x that the function can take as input.

For example:

f(x) = x / (x - 1)

Now x can have every value except 1 because the denominator (x - 1) is 0 if x = 1. That would give us 1/0 which is undefined so f(x) can't 'take' x = 1 as input.

The domain of f(x) is therefor All real values of x except x = 1.

In interval notation it is

(-∝, ∝) x not = 1

(∝ means infinity)
