Spina bifida is a group of congenital (present at birth) birth defects that affect the spinal column and the spinal cord.
What is this disease
It occurs when the neural tube, which forms the baby's spine, does not close properly during early embryonic development. This incomplete closure can lead to varying degrees of spinal cord and spinal column malformations.
Spina bifida can cause physical and neurological issues, including paralysis, bladder and bowel problems, and difficulties with leg mobility, depending on the severity of the condition.
