In 2005, a city agency spent $2000 to buy pencils at a cost of $5.00 a dozen. If the agency used 3/4 of these pencils in 2005 and used the same number of pencils in 2006, how many more pencils did it have to buy to have enough pencils for all of 2006?

The agency will have to buy 200 more pencils to have enough for all of 2006.

How to find the more number of pencil

Given data

  • The agency spent $2000 on pencils in 2005.
  • The cost per dozen pencils is $5.00.

Let's determine how many dozen pencils the agency bought in 2005:

= 2000/5

= 400

If 3/4 of these pencils were used in 2005, the remaining fraction (1/4) was saved for 2006.

= 3/4 * 400

= 300

= 1/4 * 400

= 100

Now, for 2006, the agency used the same number of pencils, which is 300 dozen.

The extra pencil required

= 300 - 100

= 200

Therefore, the agency will have to buy 200 more pencils to have enough for all of 2006.
