B. correlation coefficient is r = 0.8142

c. Hypothesis is Null: There is no significant correlation between hours worked and number of injuries.

alternative: There is a significant correlation between hours worked and number of injuries.

d. we have to reject the null hypothesis

How to solve for the values

X Values

∑ = 193

Mean = 38.6

∑(X - Mx)2 = SSx = 87.2

Y Values

∑ = 17

Mean = 3.4

∑(Y - My)2 = SSy = 41.2

X and Y Combined

N = 5

∑(X - Mx)(Y - My) = 48.8

R Calculation

r = ∑((X - My)(Y - Mx)) / √((SSx)(SSy))

r = 48.8 / √((87.2)(41.2)) = 0.8142

Meta Numerics (cross-check)

r = 0.8142

Critical value = 0.669.

since r is larger than 0.669. we have to reject the null hypothesis
