We can see here that Earth is considered an open system in certain scientific discussions, particularly in Earth sciences or environmental science. This designation is primarily due to the exchange of energy and matter between Earth and its surrounding environment.

In an open system:

  • Energy, in the form of solar radiation, constantly enters Earth's atmosphere from the Sun and is radiated back into space. This continuous flow of energy drives various processes on Earth, including weather patterns, the water cycle, and sustaining life.
  • While Earth is relatively closed with regard to matter compared to the vastness of space, it does experience exchanges of matter to some extent.
