Activity 10.1 Post-Assessment for CPR, AED and First Aid scenarios

DIRECTIONS:
You are minding your business when you come upon the following unique situations. Immediate and correct responses are needed in each situation. A wrong move by an untrained person could result in extenuating damage, paralysis, or death. Please record your answers to the best of your ability and be thorough in your thoughts and steps needed to provide immediate treatment to the injured.

Scenario 1

You are walking out of your neighborhood grocery store and see someone slumped or slouched against the outside wall. The individual’s eyes are closed, and the person appears to have collapsed/slid down the wall into the shape of a ball on the ground.

Scenario 2

You are in a restaurant with your friends and that special person you want to get to know better when suddenly on the other side of the restaurant you hear and see a commotion near a table. A person appears to be in need of assistance and is unable to talk. The person’s skin is starting to turn blue.

Scenario 3

You are driving down the road to get to your after-school job. Suddenly you pull up on what appears to be an accident between two cars. You stop and notice that each car contains three passengers (one adult, two children) and they do not appear to be moving. The adult in each car and one child in each car appear to have facial lacerations and arms bent in a weird way. One adult is wearing a bracelet. Both cars appear to have smoke or steam emitting from the engine area and you smell gasoline.

Final answer:

In scenario 1, move the person to stable ground before starting CPR. In scenario 2, call emergency services and perform CPR, using an AED if available. In scenario 3, call emergency services, ensure safety, assess responsiveness, and provide CPR if necessary.

Step-by-step explanation:

In scenario 1, the person appears to have collapsed/slid down the wall into the shape of a ball on the ground. The first priority in this situation is to check for responsiveness and call emergency services. If the person is unresponsive, it is important to perform CPR by starting chest compressions. However, before beginning CPR, it is crucial to move the person to stable ground away from the wall to ensure effective resuscitation.

In scenario 2, the person's skin turning blue indicates a lack of oxygen, suggesting a potential cardiac arrest. The immediate response should be to call emergency services and to start CPR. Additionally, an automated external defibrillator (AED) should be located and used if available.

In scenario 3, the presence of facial lacerations and bent arms in the adults and children indicate potential injuries from a car accident. The first step is to call emergency services and ensure the safety of the environment, checking for any hazards. Afterward, assess each individual's responsiveness and provide CPR if needed, while also considering the potential presence of spinal injuries.

scenario 1- check scene safety, if safe, approach patient, ask them if they are ok to check responsiveness, call EMS, if responsive ask what happened, ask if you can help, do not move patient and encourage them to stay still, stay on the phone w EMS and stay with patient until EMS arrives

scenario 2- the patient is becoming cyanotic which is a sign of choking. you want to approach the patient and ask if they are choking, if they say yes ask if you can help them, if yes perform the heimlich maneuver. after object is expelled call EMS
