The magi (sometimes called wise men in retellings or translations) come from the East to give the baby Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. So, that’s probably an allusion to the Bible story. (See the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 2). “The Gift of the Magi” is also a short story by O. Henry (American author), so perhaps, depending on the context (paragraph 9, which I have not read), the allusion could be to that story. Hope this helps. Peace!
