9 and 27

Let the smaller number be x.

The larger of two numbers is three times the smaller.

Larger number = 3x

ATQ,

x+3x = 36

4x = 36

x = 9

Smaller number = 9

Larger number = 3x = 3(9) = 27

So, the numbers are 9 and 27.
