The calculatd x value based on the line of best fit when y = 18 is x = 12

How to determine the x value when y = 18

From the question, we have the following parameters that can be used in our computation:

The scatter plot

Also, we have that the line of best fit passes through the points

(0, 4), (3, 6), (6, 8) and (12, 12)

A linear equation is represented as

y = mx + c

Where

c = y when x = 0

i.e. c = y-intercept

Using the points (0, 4), we have

c = 4

This means that

y = mx + 4

Using the point (3, 6), we have

3m + 4 = 6

3m = 2

Evaluate

m = 2/3

So, we have

y = 2/3x + 4

When y = 18, we have

2/3x + 4 = 18

2/3x = 14

Cross multiply

x = 3/2 * 14

Evaluate

x = 21

Hence, the value of x is 21
