Loius Braille was born in France in 1809. He was blinded by accident at age three, but this did not stop him from achieving great things. When he was just a teenager he developed a new way for blind people to learn. This system is called braille, after Louis's last name. The braille system helps blind people read and write easily with their fingers. Braille uses a code of six raised dots in different patterns. Before the braille system, sightless students would learn by listening to teachers. Some students had gigantic books with large letters that were very difficult to read. By 1829 books were published in braille. It was not magic. It was hard work that brought Louis success.
