Like fractions, ratios can be simplified, or reduced to their simplest form. Ratios can be simplified by dividing each quantity in the ratio by the greatest common factor. When equivalent ratios are simplified, they all result in the same ratio. For example, imagine a soccer coach designs a workout and says that for every mile you run, you must do 4 pushups. Miles and pushups are in a ratio of 1:4. If you run 2 miles, you’ll have to do 8 pushups. If you run 6 miles, you’ll have to do 24 pushups. The ratios 2:8 and 6:24 are equivalent to 1:4. When you reduce them by dividing by the greatest common factors, you’ll get 1:4. Simplify the ratio 5:35.
