There are 30 students in a class, more

boys than girls. One night they all went
to the theatre.
In the first intermission every girl bought
a cheesecake, and every boy bought
a cake. (A cake and a coke each cost a whole
number of dollars.) In
the second intermission every girl bought
coke and every boy bought
a cheesecake.
The class spent $2 less in the second
intermission than in the first one. How
many boys and girls are there in this class

Answer:

b = amount of boys

g = amount of girls

f = amount spent in first intermission

s = amount spent in second intermission

c = cake cost

x = coke cost

b = 16

g = 14

f = 76

s = 74

c = 2

x = 3

Explanation:

cg + xb = f

xg + cb = s

f - 2 = s

b + g = 30

b > g

To solve for the variables, you just have to guess and check.

(2 x 14) + (3 x 16) = 76

(3 x 14) + (2 x 16) = 74

76 - 74 = 2

16 + 14 = 30

16 > 14
