A lifeguard spots a drowning swimmer 40ft from the beach. She runs 90ft along the beach at a speed of 15ft/s, then jumps in the water and swims straight to the swimmer at the speed of 5ft/s. How long does it take her to reach the swimmer?

Answer:14 seconds

Explanation:

it takes 6 seconds to run 90 ft at 15 ft/s:

90/15=6

It takes 8 seconds to swim 40 ft at 5 ft/s:

40/5=8

8+6=14
