I have read somewhere that sophistry is deliberate and fallacy is non-deliberate; is it correct?

I have also seen in some places that these two are used for the same purpose.

Finally, what is the difference between the two? Are they not different or can a distinction be made between them?

Final answer:

Sophistry is the use of fallacious arguments with the deliberate intent to deceive, while a fallacy is any flawed reasoning or misleading argument which might be unintentional. Fallacies can be further categorized into types like fallacies of relevance and fallacies of weak induction. Sophistry has its historical roots in ancient Greek rhetoric where it was critiqued for prioritizing persuasion over truth.

Step-by-step explanation:

The terms sophistry and fallacy are indeed related to reasoning and argumentation, but they are not identical. Sophistry is a method of argument that is clever but fallacious or deceptive, used to persuade others with subtle and often insincere rhetoric, and it is usually deliberate. On the other hand, a fallacy refers more broadly to any mistaken or misleading reasoning that leads to an invalid argument. This could be non-deliberate, occurring when someone unintentionally uses poor reasoning or logic.

There are several categories of informal fallacies such as fallacies of relevance, fallacies of weak induction, fallacies of unwarranted assumption, and fallacies of diversion. A fallacy of relevance occurs when irrelevant evidence is presented, while a fallacy of weak induction involves using evidence that is insufficient to support the conclusion.

In contrast to fallacies, sophistry is characterized by a careless regard for the truth and is often associated with the Sophists of ancient Greece, who were criticized by philosophers like Plato for prioritizing persuasion over truth. Aristotle's works, such as 'Rhetoric', explore the possibilities of using rhetoric more ethically, balancing its persuasive power with a commitment to truth.
