Recently I was searching for a chemical compound to meet my research needs, i.e. glutaraldehyde, and later I found that Merck has been released different name of compound: (1) glutaraldehyde and (2) glutardialdehyde, with the same CAS number, i.e. 111-30-8:

1. Many articles I've read, just mention glutaraldehyde, not glutardialdehyde.
2. Does glutardialdehyde and glutaraldehyde are the same compound?

Final answer:

Glutardialdehyde and glutaraldehyde are two different chemical compounds with similar names. They have different structures and properties, and glutardialdehyde is less irritating to the skin and nasal passages.

Step-by-step explanation:

Glutardialdehyde and glutaraldehyde are two different chemical compounds. While they have a similar name and CAS number, they have different structures and properties.

Glutaraldehyde has two reactive aldehyde groups, allowing it to act quickly as a sterilizing agent, while glutardialdehyde has two aldehyde groups linked by an aromatic bridge. Glutardialdehyde, also known as o-phthalaldehyde (OPA), is a newer disinfectant that is less irritating to the skin and nasal passages compared to glutaraldehyde.
