I am completely new to biodiversity.

I have a question: how do I calculate Nei's gene diversity?

The formula I was given is H = 1 – Σpi2

I have an excel file with 3 different loci (Pgi-2, Pgd-2, Pgm-1). I will attach a screenshot of the table as I have no idea what I have to do. How do I calculate H for the loci?

Final answer:

To calculate Nei's gene diversity (H), use the formula H = 1 - Σpi^2. Calculate the allele frequencies for each locus and plug them into the formula to get the gene diversity for each locus.

Step-by-step explanation:

To calculate Nei's gene diversity (H), you need to use the formula H = 1 - Σpi^2. First, calculate the allele frequencies (pi) for each locus by dividing the number of copies of a particular allele by the total number of alleles at that locus. Next, square each allele frequency and sum all the squared frequencies. Finally, subtract the sum from 1 to get the gene diversity (H).

To calculate H for the loci in your excel file, you'll need to identify the alleles present at each locus and determine their frequencies. Once you have the allele frequencies, plug them into the formula to get the gene diversity for each locus.
