Write three fractions equivalent to one third.

Explantation:

A fraction is a division of two whole numbers. The top number is the numerator and the bottom number is called the denominator. In a division, the numerator is the dividend and the denominator is the divisor.

Equivalent fractions are a pair of fractions or more that equal the same number.

To find out if two or more fractions are equivalent, we transform them into a decimal number, if they are equivalent to the same number they are equivalent; otherwise they are not equivalent. To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.

The two methods for finding equivalent fractions are amplification and simplification. In the first method, the numerator and denominator are multiplied by the same number. On the other hand, in the simplification the numerator and the denominator are divided by the same number that divides them exactly.

The fraction one third is irreducible because it cannot be simplified, since there is no number that divides its numerator and its denominator exactly. For this reason we cannot apply the method of simplification.

Therefore equivalent fractions can be found by amplification. Applying this method infinitely many equivalent fractions can be found because they can be multiplied by infinitely many numbers.

Some examples of equivalent fractions of one third are:

\begin{gathered}(1)/(3) = (1.2)/(3.2) = \boxed{\sf (2)/(6) } \\ \\ (1)/(3) = \frac {1.3}{3.3} = \boxed{\sf (3)/(9) } \\ \\ (1)/(3) = (1.4)/(3.4) = \boxed{\sf (4)/( 12) } \\ \\ (1)/(3) = (1.5)/(3.5) = \boxed{\sf (5)/(15) } \\ \\ (1)/(3) = (1.6)/(3.6) =\boxed{\sf (6)/(18)}\end{gathered}
