The Indian Removal Act is known to be a very terrible thing in history. America wanted to expand, but the Native Americans were essentially in the way of that. The Indian Removal Act was made in order to move the Natives from their ancestral homelands and relocate them elsewhere.
When the Indian Removal Act was passed, most Native Americans did not want to leave. Over time, more and more did start leaving, as they realized that they could not win a war against the United States government. When some of them didn't leave though, this called for military action against them.
American soldiers walked Native Americans on a very long route to their destination, which is present-day Oklahoma. The United States government had set land for them there and they could then expand into the old territories. This walk the Natives went on is known as the Trail of Tears. They were forced from their homes and forced to walk in terrible conditions, they had little food and water, and many people caught diseases. Many Native Americans died on this journey.
