let the number of miles be x

and the total charges for x miles be y

hence the expression for the total is

y=14.99+0.88x------------1

when y=268.43

let us substitute into the eqn 1 to find x

268.43=14.99+0.88x

268.43-14.99= 0.88x

253.44=0.88x

x= 253.44/0.88

x= 288 miles

Hence the number of miles is 288miles
