1.10 * 4 = 4.40

70.40 - 4.40 = 66

66 / 4 = 16.5

Each CD was $16.50 before tax

Proof

$total \: cost = 16.5(4) + 1.10(4)$

$total \: cost = 66 + 4.40$

$total \: cost = 70.40$
