Red blood cells, also known as erythrocytes, lack mitochondria and, consequently, cannot undergo aerobic respiration. As a result, they rely on anaerobic processes for energy production. One of the anaerobic processes occurring in red blood cells is lactic acid fermentation. During this process, glucose is metabolized to produce ATP without the involvement of oxygen.
