The Mexican Government's Encouragement of Americans to Settle in Texas
The Mexican government encouraged Americans to settle in Texas in an effort to populate the area and to create a buffer between the Mexican settlements and the Native American tribes. The major reasons that led Texas to rebel against Mexico were the lack of representation for Texans in the Mexican government, the heavy taxation of Texans, and the Mexican government's attempts to outlaw slavery. Americans who were in favor of the Texas revolution were mostly slave owners and southern politicians who saw the opportunity to expand slavery into Texas.
