Michael Collins and the Anglo-Irish Treaty
In December of 1921, Michael Collins was one of the negotiators of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, which resulted in the creation of the Irish Free State. He was also one of the treaty's strongest defenders, both during the negotiations and after its ratification.
Collins was a key figure in the negotiations, as he was one of the few who had experience in dealing with the British. He was also able to gain the trust of both sides, which was essential in reaching a compromise. He played a key role in the treaty's defense, as he was able to convince many of its opponents that it was the best deal that could be reached.
The treaty was not without its detractors, and Collins was forced to defend it on several occasions. He did so by pointing out its many benefits, including the fact that it gave Ireland its independence. He also argued that the treaty was the best option for peace in Ireland.
Despite the opposition, the treaty was ratified and Collins became the first Prime Minister of the Irish Free State. He would go on to lead the country through some of its most difficult times, including the Civil War. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in Irish history.
