What is the number of chromosomes in a gemete compared to a zygote and why ?

"Gametes" have 23 chromosomes, "Zygote" is the result of two gametes (haploid) cells fusing, and becoming a diploid cell. So a diploid cell has Double the cells it had before leaving it with 46 chromosomes.
