a stationary shop orders a batch of pens from a factory. The factory could make the batch of pens in 20 days using 12 machines. Due to a fault, only 9 machines were used for the first 8 days. All 12 machines were used from day 9 onwards. Work out the total number of days taken to make the batch of pens

Final answer:

To find the total number of days taken to make the batch of pens, calculate the number of pen-days from each production technology and determine the remaining days. The total number of days is 216 pen-days.

Step-by-step explanation:

To find the total number of days taken to make the batch of pens, we need to calculate the number of pen-days from each production technology.

For the first 8 days, 9 machines were used, so the number of pen-days is 9 machines * 8 days = 72 pen-days.

From day 9 onwards, all 12 machines were used, so the number of pen-days is 12 machines * (total number of days - 8 days).

To find the total number of days, we need to determine the remaining number of days. Since the factory can make the batch of pens in 20 days using 12 machines, the remaining days would be 20 - 8 = 12 days.

Therefore, the total number of days to make the batch of pens is 72 pen-days + 12 machines * 12 days = 216 pen-days.
