What is dilation as used in geometry
Dilation in geometry is a transformation that changes the size of a figure without altering its shape or orientation.
The transformation involves scaling all points of the figure with respect to a fixed center called the center of dilation (G).
The scale factor, (in this case 1/3) which is a constant factor by which all distances from the center are multiplied, determines the degree of enlargement or reduction.
When the scale factor, k is 0 < k < 1, we have reduction, as in the figure.
