Our answer is: y = 3x - 2

\Large\textsl{Explanation}

We are asked to find the equation, given that -

  • the line passes through (2,4)
  • the line has a slope of 3

Substitute the values -

  • y - y1 = m(x - x1) <- the point-slope formula
  • y - 4 = 3(x - 2)
  • y - 4 = 3x - 6
  • y = 3x - 6 + 4
  • y = 3x - 2

\therefore y = 3x - 2

For this question, I would use the point slope equation. This is y-(y1)=m(x-x1). In this problem, y1 is 4 and x1 is 2. M, or the slope, is 3. When you plug those numbers in, you get y-4=3(x-2). After simplifying, you get y=3x-2. Therefore y=3x-2 is your answer! You can always check by graphing too.
