giant elliptical galaxies
This is why giant elliptical galaxies, the results of galaxy collisions, have so many old red stars and very little active star formation. Images from Hubble's ACS in 2004 and 2005 show four examples of interacting galaxies (at various stages in the process) far away from Earth.
