Josh was able to type 496 words in 8 minutes. How many words can he type in 35 minutes?

If we are assuming words and minutes are directly proportional to each other, we can say that w (words) = k (constant variable) x t (time in mins).

  • NOTE: directly proportional means that as one variable increases, the other variable increases too (or if one decreases, the other also decreases).

K is the constant variable, which we must work out to find out any other time. If you rearrange the formula, it shows that k can be calculated by doing w/t. We have a set of values we can use to calculate k which are given in the question. So if we use this formula to calculate k, then:

k= w/t

k= 496/8

k= 62

Now we know the constant variable is 62. So, we go back to our equation but now we must find how many words. We now have our k value and our value for t. So, now we substitute:

w=kt

w= 62 x 35

w= 2170
