1. Atticus would like the help that Jem and Scout gave Mrs. Dubose to be something natural and indeed beneficial. If they were aware of the addiction before her death, they would try something that was not natural, they would force help that could be harmful to her and they could be frustrated if she could not overcome the addiction.
2. Mrs. Dubose was, in fact, an example of courage, because she decided to fight against what most satisfied her, she fought against something she needed, because her body demanded morphic, but she knew she should not die that way and that this was not the image she wanted to leave to the world. She challenged herself and only the brave ones do that.
