Texas formally seceded on March 2, 1861 to become the seventh state in the new Confederacy. of 1861, more than 25,000 had joined the Confederate army. During the course of the war, nearly 90,000 Texans served in the military. They fought frontier and border raiders, evaded federal blockades, protected internal trade routes and operated prisoner of war camps. The Civil War came to an end in Texas. Texas won its independence from Mexico and joined the Union as a state in 1845. It was the largest state in the Confederacy. Because most of the great battles of the Civil War were fought east of the Mississippi River, it is often forgotten that Texas made major contributions to the war effort in terms of men and supplies. Over 70,000 Texans served in the Confederate army during the war and fought in almost every major battle.
