in a problem from Monday "how many 2.5-inch by 6-inch tiles will fit on a backsplash that is 2.5 feet tall by 8 feet long?" With each tile costing $0.80 and a tax rate of 5%, how much change would you get back if you paid with two $100 bills?

Answer:

Explanation:

part 1

1) convert to inches

2.5ft * 12 = 30in

8ft * 12 = 96in

2) find area of backsplash

96in * 30in = 2880in^2

3) find area of each tile

2.5in * 6in = 15in^2

4) divide area of backsplash by each tile

2880 / 15 = 192 tiles

part 2

1) find pre-tax cost

192 * 0.80 = $153.6

2) find tax

$153.6 * .05 = $7.68

3) add tax to total

$153.6 + $7.68 = $161.28

4) subtract total from $200

$200 - $161.28 = $38.72
