The Legend of Basey

(Legend of the Visayas)

Because of the cruelty shown by sea pirates, the residents of Balud, led by the Jesuit missionaries, went to Binongtoan, a nearby village. There, they began to build a new village and a sturdy fort made of adobe stones. They fortified their village, placing barriers to protect against the violent attacks of sea pirates. The leaders of Binongtoan were Ambrocio Makarumpag, Francisco Karanguing, Juan Katindoy, and Tomas Makahilig. During a meeting of leaders attended by Jesuit missionaries, they agreed to name the place Baysay, meaning 'beautiful,' in honor and memory of their beautiful Bungangsakit. Meanwhile, the people of Omit, who had interacted with Bungangsakit during her youth, did not join in the founding of the town of Baysay. Instead, they united and established their own barangay called Guibaysayi, meaning 'The Most Beautiful,' as a tribute to the beauty of their Bungangsakit. The residents of Baysay formed a group of defenders composed of brave men in their area, led by Katindoy, a brave warrior. They knew that the sea pirates would return, so they built a fortress made of sturdy stones in Bungal at the mouth of the river. In this fortress, Katindoy's brave defenders would gather to plan their defenses against sea pirates and watch for incoming sailboats. In 1832, some selected areas in Bungal were prepared for the construction of the Catholic Church by the Jesuits. Unfortunately, the walo-walo arrived, a continuous eight days of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. Unfortunately, the walo-walo arrived, a continuous eight days of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds. After a few days, a very strong and furious typhoon passed through the area, claiming many lives and destroying numerous properties. Because there was no shelter and the storm had devastated the area, the surviving residents of Baysay decided to move again to find a place with hills that would serve as protection against strong winds. They chose the current location of the town of Baysay. Near this place, there are hills, one of which was chosen by the natives to build a tall tower. From the tower, they could see the incoming sailboats, and the hills could provide refuge during floods and shelter during strong storms.
