Answer is the ratio 8:1

Step-by-step explanation

The ratio 10:1 represents 10 standard seats for every 1 priority seat.

We can scale that up to 10x:1x where x is some positive whole number.

standard + priority = 10x+1x = 11x = total number of seats

11x = 44 solves to x = 4, then,

  • 10x = 10*4 = 40 standard seats
  • 1x = 1*4 = 4 priority seats

Note the ratio 40:4 reduces to 10:1 when dividing both parts by 4.

Installing an additional priority seat gets us 4+1 = 5 priority seats.

The new ratio of standard to priority is 40:5 which reduces to 8:1
