Publishing The following table shows the results of a survey of 500 authors by a publishing company.

Unsuccessful 85 230 315
Total 130 370 500
Compute the relative frequency of the given event if an author as specified is chosen at random.
An author is unsuccessful and new.

The relative frequency that an author is unsuccessful and new is 0.17

From the table :

  • Unsuccessful and new = 85
  • Total number of authors = 500

The relative frequency can be calculated using the relation;

  • Number of unsuccessful and new authors / Total number of authors

Now we have

Relative Frequency = 85 / 500 = 0.17

Hence, the relative frequency is 0.17
