- 3x + 8y = 1 → (2)

Since the signs of the coefficients of x are opposite, then adding them will eliminate the x- term, that is

Add (1) and (2) term by term

0 + 14y = 28

14y = 28 ( divide both sides by 14 )

y = 2

Then substitute y = 2 into either equation for corresponding value of x
