Why is the absolute value used to find distances on a coordinate plane?

Absolute value is the distance between 2 points on a number​ line, so it gives the distance between any 2 points. Absolute value basically measures how far the number is from zero. It is used to determine distances on a coordinate plane because distances will not have negative values.
